- Published private-pay prices for bypass in Colombia run about $12,000 to $24,000 in 2026.
- In the US, the "price" depends on who pays: Medicare paid Pennsylvania hospitals an average of $43,252, insurers a national median of $57,240, and hospitals listed self-pay prices at a median of $75,047.
- US self-pay patients often pay more than insurers do, which is exactly why the comparison matters if you are uninsured.
- The procedure price is not the trip price. Budget for three to four weeks in Colombia, a companion, and follow-up at home.
Five ways to price the same operation
Ask "what does bypass surgery cost in the US?" and you can get five honest answers that differ by a factor of six. They all describe the same operation, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), where a surgeon uses a vessel from your chest, arm or leg to route blood around blocked coronary arteries.
Medicare and cost figures are for the hospital stay; surgeon and anesthesia fees are billed separately in the US. Colombian ranges are usually quoted as a package, so ask what is included.

- Billed charges. Pennsylvania hospitals billed an average of $261,971 per bypass in 2023 to 2024, with individual hospitals ranging from about $96,000 to $587,0001. Almost nobody pays this, but it is the number on the first bill an uninsured patient sees.
- What Medicare paid. Across 3,044 Medicare bypass cases in Pennsylvania in the same period, the average Medicare payment was $43,2522.
- What it costs the hospital. National data from 2018 put the mean hospital cost of a bypass stay at $46,8003.
- What insurers negotiate. A 2024 study of price-transparency files from 544 US hospitals found a median commercial insurer price of $57,2404.
- What hospitals list for self-pay patients. The same study found a median listed self-pay price of $75,047, about 2.6 times the study's own Medicare median of $28,398, a figure for uncomplicated bypass only4. Prices also vary by region: median prices in the study ran from about $35,600 in the East South Central states to $84,100 on the Pacific coast5.
That last point is the uncomfortable one. If you are uninsured in the US, the published cash price for bypass at many hospitals is higher than what an insurer pays for the same surgery. A Colombian quote should be compared with the US price you would actually face, not with the Medicare rate.
Before you compare anything, ask your local hospital for its written self-pay price for your specific procedure. US hospitals must publish standard charges, and a written number is the only fair baseline. Our sister site Cash Medical covers your self-pay rights in detail.
What bypass costs in Colombia
A Colombian consumer price survey published in May 2026 puts private-pay bypass surgery at 40 to 80 million pesos at private cardiovascular clinics in Bogotá and Medellín6. At the September 28, 2026 exchange rate of 3,306.86 pesos per dollar, that is about $12,100 to $24,2007. The same survey notes that Colombians covered by the national health system (EPS) generally pay nothing for this surgery, because it is classed as a high-cost condition. International patients pay private rates.
A 2026 Medical Tourism Association article lists Colombian bypass at $12,000 to $22,0008, which lines up. Directory listings outside that band exist. PlacidWay lists Colombian bypass at $7,9009, the lowest figure we found, and we treat it as an outlier. A single Medellín clinic on Bookimed lists $10,000, but the same listing also sells stem-cell therapy for heart failure10, so we do not use it as a reference.
The number of grafts, whether a valve is repaired at the same time, days in intensive care, and your other conditions all move the price. A range is a starting point. An itemized quote from a hospital that has seen your catheterization report is the real number.
How Colombia compares with other destinations
To compare countries fairly you need one publisher using one method. The Medical Tourism Association published 2026 ranges for several destinations:
These are directory "industry average" ranges, not audited prices. Price is one input; accreditation, surgeon volume, travel time and altitude are others.
Colombia lands in the middle: above India and Turkey11,12, below Thailand and Costa Rica13,14. Price alone should not decide this. Flight time from North America, accreditation, the specific surgical team's volume, and, in Colombia's case, the altitude of the city you choose all matter more for heart surgery than a few thousand dollars.
What a bypass quote should include
Colombian hospitals usually quote cardiac surgery as a package. Packages differ, so check each of these explicitly:
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Surgeon, assistant and anesthesiologist fees | In the US these are billed separately from the hospital. Confirm they are inside the package. |
| Intensive care days | Most bypass patients spend one to two days in the ICU15. Ask the daily rate for any extra day. |
| Ward days | The average stay after heart surgery is about five days to a week16,17. Ask what happens if yours runs longer. |
| Perfusion and operating room time | Usually included, but confirm for on-pump surgery. |
| Pre-operative tests | Repeat imaging or labs on arrival can add cost. |
| Medications and supplies | In-hospital drugs, and what you leave with. |
| Post-discharge visit | A wound and rhythm check before you fly should be in the plan. |
| Complications policy | What is covered if you need to go back to surgery, or stay much longer. |

The trip around the surgery
The price of the operation is the biggest number, but it is not the only one.
- Time. The minimum time before flying after uncomplicated bypass is 10 days in British Cardiovascular Society guidance and 10 to 14 days in UK Civil Aviation Authority guidance18,19. Our planning advice is three to four weeks in Colombia. That is three to four weeks of lodging, meals and local transport.
- A companion. You will not be able to lift luggage, and you should not be alone for the first week out of hospital. Budget for someone to travel with you.
- Recovery at home. Full recovery from bypass takes about 6 to 12 weeks15, and cardiac rehab, typically 8 to 12 weeks of supervised sessions, should happen at home20.
- Insurance. Original Medicare generally does not pay for scheduled care outside the US21. If you have any coverage, ask in writing before you book.
Paying a Colombian hospital
Colombian hospitals price in pesos, and the peso moves. In 2026 alone the official exchange rate has ranged from about 3,798 pesos per dollar in March to 3,307 at the end of September22,7, a swing of more than 12 percent. A quote converted at one rate can cost noticeably more or less in dollars a month later.
Ask whether the hospital will quote in dollars, or lock the peso price, and confirm how deposits and the balance are paid. If you are paying in pesos, a transfer service often beats a bank wire on the exchange rate. Wise23 is one option. Is it worth it?
For a stable patient who would otherwise face a self-pay price in the tens of thousands of dollars, the gap is large enough to matter, even after a month of lodging and a companion's flights. For an insured patient with a manageable out-of-pocket maximum, the math often does not work, because you are trading a known US bill for travel risk and a long time away.
And for anyone whose condition is not stable, it is not a money question at all. Read our checklist of who should not travel before you price anything.
